Call for Concepts: Residencies and Hinterhalt Commission

Starting now, Berlin musicians can apply for Musicboard’s residencies as part of of the second round of funding in 2024. For the first time, there is a residency explicitly aimed at musicians with children. Musicboard is also continuing its cooperation with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, welcoming applications for the Hinterhalt commission. The application deadline is 1 June 2024 at 6:00 p.m.

Creative retreat, co-creation, and family-friendly spaces: Musicboard Berlin is awarding further residencies at five special locations in Germany and abroad as well as the commissioned Hinterhalt production in cooperation with Deutsche Oper Berlin. From now until the application deadline on 1 June 2024 at 6:00 p.m., musicians from all genres and areas of pop music who live and work in Berlin can submit an application via the online form.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY RESIDENCY FOR MUSICIANS WITH CHILDREN

One of the two advertised residencies at HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts is explicitly aimed at musicians who are parents and would like to take up the residency with a child or children. Musicboard and HELLERAU want to raise awareness on how parenthood impacts working conditions in the music scene, promoting the compatibility of making music and raising a family. This pilot project is intended to provide practical input on a joint learning process that will lead to further family-friendly support and artistic production. Earlier this year, Musicboard introduced supplementary allowances for children and caregivers accompanying artists on their residencies in order to make the programme more accessible for musicians with children. Which residencies are family-friendly can be viewed on the Musicboard website and can be discussed in a personal consultation prior to applying.

HINTERHALT COMMISSION

After the cooperation with the Deutsche Oper was put on hold last year due to renovation work at the opera house, we are delighted to be able to continue the Hinterhalt commission again in 2024. This funded project comprises the composition and design of a production as part of the series ›Aus dem Hinterhalt‹ in the Tischlerei of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The commissioned artist develops a standalone music-theatre piece based on their own material, serving as a commentary on the operatic works that premiere on the main stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin during the same season. The cooperation aims to create interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration between pop-cultural and classical music scenes and between independent and institutional music structures.

CO-CREATION RESIDENY DETROIT / BERLIN, RESIDENCIES IN LOS ANGELES, PARIS, DRESDEN, AND THE UCKERMARK REGION

Berlin musicians can also apply for the co-creation residency Detroit / Berlin. In cooperation with the Detroit-Berlin Connection, the residency is aimed at musicians from the field of electronic music and promotes exceptional collaborations and long-term artistic and cultural exchange. Musicboard is also continuing its collaboration with long-standing partners in Germany and abroad and is once again offering residencies at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles (in cooperation with Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. V.), in Ris-Orangis/Paris (in cooperation with the venue Le Plan), at HELLERAU in Dresden and at Sternhagen Gut in the Uckermark region.
