SOUND(ING) SYSTEMS

SOUND(ING) SYSTEMS tells the story of the Cold War continuum starting from the so-called Loudspeaker War and the Studio am Stacheldraht in Berlin. In live performances and symposia, the four-part festival addresses the surprising political entanglement of Jamaican and Korean sound systems in the global struggle of the Great Powers for ideological influence, the controversial use of acoustic weapons in Cuba and the politicisation of global club culture and its subcultures. It engages critically with the ideological use of sound systems in Cold War history, exploring global transformations of sound system culture. SOUND(ING) SYSTEMS took place on the occasion of Nik Nowak’s exhibition Schizo Sonics and in cooperation with the Kesselhaus of the KINDL – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst (›Centre for Contemporary Art‹).
