Kerim Melik Becker aka Kechou is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, rapper, producer, and instrument maker based in Berlin. He works with live loops and (North) African instruments, genres, and soundscapes, which he combines with electronic elements and musical styles such as house, hip-hop, Afrobeats, and kwaito. His various self-designed and -built instruments are a major part of creating a unique sonic imprint. He sings and raps in French, English, and German, occasionally incorporating words from the Algerian dialect Darija. In his lyrics, he explores themes of love, pain, origin, migration, and belonging as well as the sadness, lostness, and loneliness of the »modern« human.
Kechou receives a grant of 6,000 euros in 2023.
