BARRIEREFREI DURCH DEN KIEZ

Accessibility means unrestricted and self-determined access for all people, regardless of their abilities, in various realms of life. This requires a careful consideration and rethinking of various needs in the design of cultural offerings. In 2020, Musicboard initiated a pool of advisors with its project Barrierefrei durch den Kiez (»Barrier-Free through the Neighbourhood«), helping funding recipients and other interested parties better understand accessibility and its implementation in the planning of events.

WHAT IS THE MOTIVATION BEHIND BARRIEREFREI DURCH DEN KIEZ?

Cultural events, even if they are designed to be accessible and inclusive, are predominantly initiated and implemented by people without disabilities. People with disabilities only form the target group as a potential audience, but rarely take active roles in such projects. Barrierefrei durch den Kiez (»Barrier-free through the Neighborhood«) wants to counteract this tendency.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT LOOK LIKE?

As part of the Musicboard project Barrierefrei durch den Kiez, Berliners with disabilities receive training from scene experts to become consultants for barrier-free event planning in a qualification programme spanning several months. The qualification programme aims to implement long-term goals within Berlin‘s cultural scene: from a systematic evaluation of venues in terms of their accessibility, to non-discriminatory language, to the legal principles of cultural participation for people with disabilities.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project had to be paused until further notice.
