Allocation of Funding: Scholarships & Residencies 2021

For the ninth year in a row, Musicboard Berlin, together with an independent jury, is awarding scholarships and residencies to pop musicians and bands who live and work in Berlin. The Senate Department for Culture and Europe is significantly strengthening existing scholarship programmes as announced in its press release of March 23, 2021. In line with this, Musicboard Berlin is pleased to be able to double the funding budget for scholarships in this funding round. In addition, we would like to inform you that the Support Tour Funding programme will be suspended in favour of the Scholarships & Residencies programme in the funding year 2021. Furthermore, the second application deadline for additional selected residencies and the two Hinterhalt Commissions, scheduled for June 1, 2021, will be postponed to July 15, 2021.

The scholarships and residencies were recommended by a jury of Berlin pop experts, consisting of Julia Lorenz (editor and author), Pamela Owusu-Brenyah (freelance A&R, music consultant, curator Pop-Kultur Festival), Sarah Farina (DJ and producer), Elia Rediger (artist, dramatist) and Katja Lucker (Managing Director of Musicboard Berlin GmbH).

The jury remarks: »One could assume that Berlin’s artists are tired in the second year of the pandemic: tired of being musicians under corona circumstances, tired of being forced to remain visible, solvent and confident without performance opportunities. But instead, the Musicboard jury witnessed a very strong – and wide awake – vintage of applicants. We are impressed by the strength and independence of the 88 artists, whether newcomers or established musicians, that Musicboard will support with a scholarship or residency this year. The fact that women and non-binary people, BIPoC and queer artists continue to shape Berlin’s music scene in such a visionary way gives us as the jury hope that even the pandemic cannot destroy Berlin’s diverse pop landscape.«

ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR ARTISTS IN 2021

Due to the current dynamic Covid-19 situation, the application deadline originally scheduled for June 1, 2021, will be postponed to July 15, 2021.

The Support Tour Funding programme will be suspended in favour of the Scholarships & Residencies programme and is expected to restart in 2022.
