Allocation of Funding: Residencies 2023

Musicboard Berlin is granting residencies at five special locations in Germany and abroad with the second funding round 2023. Eight musicians and bands who will receive the co-creation residency Detroit / Berlin and the residencies in Los Angeles, Ris-Orangis/Paris, Dresden, and the Uckermark region have now been selected. They will take up the residencies between fall 2023 and summer 2024.  

The residencies in the second round of funding in 2023 were open for applications until 1 June 2023. In this funding round, Musicboard received a total of 188 applications from Berlin musicians and bands.

The scholarships and residencies were recommended by a jury of Berlin pop experts, consisting of Aida Baghernejad (cultural journalist), Ji-Hun Kim (Editor-in-chief Das Filter, freelance lecturer, DJ and music producer), Katja Lucker (Managing Director of Musicboard Berlin GmbH), Thien Nguyen (label owner, DJ, music and film producer), Pamela Owusu-Brenyah (A&R, music consultant and curator Pop-Kultur Festival), and Misla Tesfamariam (artist manager, label owner). The co-creation resident from Detroit was selected by the cooperation partner Detroit-Berlin Connection.

CO-CREATION RESIDENCY DETROIT / BERLIN

Musicboard Berlin in cooperation with the Detroit-Berlin Connection grants one Berlin and one Detroit-based solo artist from the field of electronic music a two-way co-creation residency. The idea of this residency is to promote unique exchange and collaboration between musicians from Detroit and musicians from Berlin.

In 2023, the Co-Creation Residency Detroit / Berlin is granted to Shawescape Renegade from Detroit and Sara Miller from Berlin.

RESIDENCY AT VILLA AURORA, LOS ANGELES

Musicboard Berlin in cooperation with the Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. V. grants a three-month residency at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, USA. As an established residency house, Villa Aurora offers a space for interdisciplinary exchange as well as the opportunity to work on own artistic projects.

In 2023, the residency in Los Angeles is granted to Molly Nilsson.

RESIDENCY AT LE PLAN, RIS-ORANGIS/PARIS

In cooperation with the live venue Le Plan, Musicboard Berlin grants a three-week residency in Ris-Orangis near Paris, France. The residency is particularly suitable for musicians who are looking to develop or implement a specific technical or artistic project using resources and equipment of the highest standard. It is accompanied by an artist coaching.

In 2023, the residency in Ris-Orangis is granted to Johanna Amelie.

RESIDENCY AT HELLERAU, DRESDEN

In cooperation with HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts, Musicboard Berlin grants two four-week domestic residencies in Dresden. The residencies offer an international, collaborative and interdisciplinary working atmosphere, as well as on-site mentoring.

In 2023, the residencies in Dresden are granted to Choka and Hans Unstern.

RESIDENCY AT STERNHAGEN GUT, UCKERMARK

Musicboard Berlin grants two three-week residencies at Sternhagen Gut in the Uckermark region of Brandenburg, accompanied by individual mentoring through Gudrun Gut. Sternhagen Gut is an ideal retreat for musicians who want to work, write and compose their music in a focused and calm environment.

In 2023, the residencies in the Uckermark region are granted to ceci + De Pepa and Yvois.

NEXT CALL FOR APPLICATIONS IN 2024

The next Call for Concepts for Musicboard’s project scholarships and residencies is expected to take place in January 2024 with the application deadline 1 March 2024.

Berlin musicians and bands can still apply for the Support Tour Funding programme on an ongoing basis this year until 30 November 2023.
