Weaving warm, electronic vocal sounds with organic rhythms and percussive beats, Kaala reaches into rather deep and dark thematic spheres. In her lyrics, the songwriter, singer and producer ostensibly deals with aspects of the human psyche, in particular with the complexity of mental health. In her search for belonging, Kaala finds it in the musical synthesis of influences from Indian music and experimental influences in the style of artists like Moses Sumney, Sevdaliza and Kimbra. In their duality, they symbolically convey the musician’s own intercultural experience as a German-Indian woman; as a tapestry of sound, however, they attain a strong, affective presence.
In 2021, Kaala is receiving a grant of 7,000 euros for the mixing and mastering of a concept album.
