Founded in autumn 2020, Jembaa Groove sees itself as an intercultural music formation. Based on West African, especially Ghanaian rhythms and starting from driving grooves and basslines, Jembaa Groove combines traditional and modern elements. The seven-piece band follows minimalist principles, drawing inspiration from vintage sounds of the 60s and 70s as well as from current neo-soul, jazz and hip-hop trends of Berlin’s subcultural scenes, to which the members of Jembaa Groove partly belong. Claiming not to conform to any final genre definition, the formation is mainly driven by a common groove. »Jembaa« means and symbolises »life« – Jembaa Groove translates this as an attitude into a sonic aesthetic that radiates lightness and warmth.
In 2021, Jembaa Groove is receiving a grant of 4,000 euros for the production, release and marketing of an EP.
