Collo Awata’s art – whether music, sound design, DJing or video – is deeply interwoven with experiences of the African diaspora. By weaving in Western practices from club culture, fashion and art, Collo Awata reflects his own Kenyan background in multidimensional electronic productions and mixes. Inspired by numerous curation jobs, Collo Awata co-founded the experimental label NIA Records, which specialises in unusual sound projects by artists from marginalised groups and underrepresented communities with an honest and radically open approach. In addition to releasing his own EPs and tracks on compilations by the labels Decisions and Radiant Love, Collo Awata creates striking soundscapes for fashion and art projects.
In 2021, Collo Awata was given the tandem residency between Singapore and Berlin, on which Collo Awata teamed up with Madam Data in the online realm. The resulting digital collaboration was presented in 2022 at both the festivals CTM in Berlin and Playfreely in Singapore.
