In 2019, glanz&krawall started a radical alternative to the classical-music festival industry with Berlin is Not Bayreuth, attracting over 1,000 visitors. In 2020, the collective wanted to follow up by reviving the original idea of having the world‘s largest lake festival in Berlin Wedding. To this end, they converted Strandbad Plötzensee into a lake stage for Richard Wagner‘s »Lohengrin« and »Tristan und Isolde« – the fatalistic operas that the Bregenz Festival has always adamantly scorned. While the classical festival business is at a standstill worldwide, Berlin is not Bregenz aims specifically for those who‘ve never seen an opera house from the inside. An evening of music theatre on the lake, an occasion to bring different people of a city together and into a possible dialogue.
