Allocation of Funding: Residencies 2022

Musicboard is pleased to announce the musicians who are being granted a domestic or international residency this year as part of the second application deadline for the Scholarships & Residencies programme as well as the two Hinterhalt Commissions awarded in cooperation with the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The six residencies will take place at four special locations and were open for applications until July 1, 2022. In this funding round, Musicboard received a total of 83 applications from Berlin musicians and bands for the residencies and a total of 34 application for both of the Hinterhalt Commissions.

The residencies were recommended by a jury of Berlin pop experts, consisting of Julia Lorenz (editor and author), Katja Lucker (Managing Director of Musicboard Berlin GmbH), Pamela Owusu-Brenyah (freelance A&R and music consultant; curator Pop-Kultur Festival), Sarah Farina (DJ and producer) and (label operator, DJ, music and film producer).

DOMESTIC RESIDENCY: HELLERAU, DRESDEN

In cooperation with HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts, Musicboard awards two three-week domestic residencies at HELLERAU in Dresden in 2022. The application was open to Berlin soloists, duos or groups/bands from the pop-cultural, interdisciplinary field.

DOMESTIC RESIDENCY: STERNHAGEN GUT, UCKERMARK

Awarded by the Musicboard in cooperation with Sternhagen Gut was the domestic residency at Sternhagen Gut in the Uckermark region. Berlin-based solo musicians, duos or groups/bands from the electronic or electro-acoustic field could apply for the two three-week domestic residencies.

INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCY: LOS ANGELES

Musicboard Berlin in cooperation with the Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. V. grants one Berlin pop musician a three-month residency at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, USA in 2023. The residency at Villa Aurora is intended for artists of all pop music genres.

TANDEM RESIDENCY: DETROIT & BERLIN

With the idea of promoting unique exchange and collaboration between musicians from Detroit and musicians from Berlin, Musicboard – in cooperation with the Detroit-Berlin Connection – awards a two-part tandem residency to one Berlin-based artist and one Detroit-based artist. Musicians from the field of electronic music could apply. The tandem residency will take place in Detroit and Berlin in 2023.

In 2022, the following artists are being granted the Detroit & Berlin tandem residency:

HINTERHALT COMMISSION: DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN

In addition, in 2022, two Hinterhalt Commissions were again awarded for the composition and design of a production in the project ›Aus dem Hinterhalt‹ in cooperation with Deutsche Oper Berlin. The Musicboard scholarship holder develops an original evening of music theater as commentary on one of the opera works premiering on the main stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the same season. The performance of the resulting productions is planned for 2023.
