PURPOSE OF THE FUNDING PROGRAM
The Special Call for Concepts is intended to support Berlin pop-music projects that can take place under the current conditions, that test innovative approaches to the current music-cultural challenges or that deal with the effects of the Corona crisis on their own work processes and the Berlin music scene.
Types of projects could, for instance, be small open-air events in compliance with distance regulations, the elaboration of a study (e.g. by means of a survey) or the development (and/or implementation) of new digital concepts.
The Special Call for Concepts is aimed at players in the Berlin pop music scene (e.g. organizers, collectives, venues) who support Berlin pop musicians and in particular up-and-coming artists through their project.
With the term ‘pop music’ Musicboard refers to all genres of popular music as well as cross-genre or experimental pop music that cannot be clearly assigned to the categories of jazz or classical and new music.
Up-and-coming artists are musicians that have already made their first steps towards a professional career (e.g. first major concert/performance, first solo album), but need further support to establish their career, nationally and internationally. A certain degree of professionalization is mandatory, there is no age limit. Berlin must be the main place of residence and work.
Note: The Special Call for Concepts is neither aimed at projects in the field of cultural education, nor does it fund individual artists or bands! In the latter case, please check the programs Scholarships & Residencies and Support-Tour Funding!

Further information on open-air event opportunities (in German only):
The supported projects should generate an overall benefit for the pop music scene and music industry, thus the submitted projects should comprise a total scope of at least 5.000 Euro (which does not have to be the requested amount of funding). The implementation of the proposed project cannot commence before the notification of the funding decision. The projects can start around the beginning of August and must be completed by the end of the year (finished concept, event, etc.).
The funding decisions are made with an eye to representing the diversity of Berlin’s music scene. Musicboard focuses on promoting women* and PoC in pop culture as well as strengthening the LGBTQI+ scene. In particular, the content of the projects must be based on a 50/50 participation of female* artists (e.g. booking, workshop organisers, participation of artists).
In addition, one focus is on accessibility and inclusion. The aim is to bring people with and without disabilities together in the Berlin music scene. In the case of event formats, applicants are requested to design at least half of the event (or the main venue/main stage of the event) completely barrier-free. We further welcome the inclusion of people with disabilities into the line-ups. Other formats should also deal creatively with the topic of accessibility and inclusion (e.g. online accessibility). Extra material and personnel costs for the barrier-free design of the project may be applied for (no investment costs). Information on the barrier-free design of events in project funding can be found here (currently in German only).
