Emrah Gökmen, born in 1988 in Dersim, is a Zaza and queer music and visual artist shaped by experiences of displacement. Emrah spent formative childhood years during the 1990s, a time when language, culture, and everyday life in Dersim were heavily restricted. In 2005, Emrah moved to Istanbul to study music at the Conservatory of the Müjdat Gezen Art Centre. In 2009, Emrah fled Turkey and settled in Berlin, joining the city’s artistic community after years of creative development as a refugee. Emrah completed a degree in Fine Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts in 2021.
Emrah Gökmen’s artistic expression is rooted in spirituality, love, a deep connection to nature, experiences of homelessness, collectivism, and resistance. Through an interdisciplinary practice encompassing sound, text, film, and installation, Emrah intertwines the personal with the political, exploring alternative identities and reviving social and collective memories.
Emrah Gökmen receives a scholarship of 7,000 euros in 2024 to work on the production of an album.
